In 1986 route 171, the old tram route 33/35, was split in two.  From its inception in 1951 route 171 had run from Forest Hill to Bruce Grove.  Initially rather than running through the Kingsway tunnel (which would have been too narrow for buses), routes 171 and 172 ran down Kingsway and then round Aldwych and along Surrey Street to Embankment towards Westminster Bridge.

At some point  pre-1980s route 171, instead of going along Theobalds Road to Holborn, turned left into Grays Inn Road, then round Holborn Circus and down New Fetter Lane and right into Fleet Street thence on to Aldwych and then across Waterloo Bridge. 

In 1986 the northern section, Waterloo to Bruce Grove was separated out as route 171A. By 1991 the route had been extended from Bruce Grove to Northumberland Park. In the late 1990s London Buses was progressing with a policy of renumbering the remaining routes with a suffix letter, and the 171A became 341 in 1998.
