In the movie the song plays on the radio as Rudra (Arjun Rampal) is about to bid farewell to Suraiya (Sruthi Hassan), a prostitute. This song celebrates and elaborates the brief moments right before having to bid someone good bye, hoping against hope that, that someone stays just a little longer. There is an undertone of the sexual relationship that Rudra and Suraiya share as complete strangers trying to bond as lovers, throughout the song, every line is as beautiful as the other, playing with the complexity of the situation and the different emotions that accompany farewells and goodbyes.

Dear Koushik,

Thanks for dropping by and sharing your thoughts.

I totally agree with you, ghazals may be convoluted, but they are beautiful at the same time, and there should be some starting point for anyone trying to making an attempt to understand them.

I am glad my this blog post could serve as a starting point for you in this wonderful journey.

The film was a musical hit and is still remembered for its music by Naushad, with hits like "Aawaaz De Kahaan Hai", "Jawaan Hai Mohabbat Haseen Hai Zamana" and "Mere Bachpan Ke Saathi Mujhe Bhool Na Jaana". The film also featured playback singer, Mohammed Rafi's first notable song, "Tera Khilauna Toota Balak",[2] and became the highest-grossing film at the Indian box office in 1946.[1]

Chander and Lata were good childhood friends in Jahanabad, Lata was the daughter of a rich family, whereas Chander was the son of a poor, widowed mother. Lata's parents did not like Lata being friends with Chander. Lata's family gets transferred to Bombay. At the time of departure, Lata gifts her watch to Chander as a memento.

They grow up. Chander goes to Bombay to search for Lata. Chander's rich friend Prakash opens a musical instruments shop for Chander, where Chander can earn his livelihood by repairing musical instruments. Prakash's mother does not like Prakash spending money on Chander. Lata has become a writer, her work is published under the nickname of "Renu" aka "Renuka Devi"; Chander becomes a fan of her work. Basanti is Lata's friend. In one of her novels, Lata writes the story of the Childhood friendship of Chander and Lata. Chander reads it and writes a letter to Renu (Lata) to find out how she knows of this story and if she knows Lata she can help him find her. Reading that letter, Basanti forces Lata to call Chander to meet, plotting that Basanti will meet Chander as well as Lata. Basanti meets Chander there and falls in love with him. Chander was carrying the watch gifted by Lata to him all the time, which he loses when Basanti meets him and Basanti locates it. Seeing the watch, Lata recognizes it and recognizes Chander. Basanti feels hurt and blames Lata that she had known that Basanti was in love with Chander, and even then Lata did not tell her that Chander is the same guy who Lata herself was in love with. Lata later tells her that she herself was not aware of it.

Lata's parents contact Prakash for marrying Lata. When Chander learns of it, under the lifetime of obligations to Prakash, he sacrifices his love for Lata in favour of Prakash. Chander's mother dies. Prakash marries Lata; Chander walks off into the sunset, followed by Basanti.

lovely post sir. Brought back memories of Vividh Bharati, our old Phillips radio which would take five minutes to warm up, the "antakshari" games where all these old songs were sung with great fervour, if not talent, by aunties and uncles, and of course La Dame Noor Jehan who was everybody's favorite. My mom used to do a nice imitation of hers by singing thru her nose this very song.

Cheers!

s.p.balasubramaniam is a smoker and he tells dasannan as he calls him repeatedly advices him to leave it as he is a stickler for such things but spb continues to so ,for some like him ,noorjehan, lata and others thier talent is so good that they can do anything ,they are true gandharvas born to pleasure us folks

Lovely , lovely post. And such interesting details and trivia. Thanks for the audio as well.

The old songs are so melodious. When Noorhjehan returned to India after many years in 1982, as a visitor from Pakistan, she was welcomed and feted so grandly, and was even received by Indira Gandhi.

Thnaks BPSK, Narendra, Hari, Indrani - Noorjehan is a very intereting person, her life story is a book by itself...

Thanks Raji for dropping by - I saw that telecast when Noorjehan sang in Mortal singers Immortal melodies. You can see her singing this and hear it on youtube..

Hi, there. Very nice post and interesting blog. I stumbled upon this while I was looking up this film, after enjoying a clip of "Jawan Hai Mohabbat."

It is interesting that you are a wandering Mallu living in the U.S. I am a native of the U.S. who would love to wander to Kerala. For various reasons, it's a place that's fascinated me for quite some time.

It seems that it's been a while since you posted about films here(?)... I'd like to see more posts from you about films.

I have a blog (linked here) that I once started as a music blog which is now devoted almost entirely to classic Indian movies.

The one person who gets more attention than anyone else there these days is Padmini. For over a year now, I have simply been in love with the Padmini of about 1955 to 1971. Having read about your origins and your historical knowledge, it would be very interesting sometime to learn what you might know about the Travancore Sisters.

Thanks Richard - well Kerala is a nice place to visit and wander around in.

I see quite a lot of movies mainly Hindi, Tamil & malayalam and a few English ones as well, but so many people write about movies and so well. Hence i avoid it unless i really like a movie. In fact i was planning to post one on a few movies i saw recently, but most of them being malayalam may not interest you..

Anything specific you wd like to know about Padmini & Ragini? Today their tradition is carried on by their relatives & actors like Shobana and Vineet. All of them are on wikipedia.

Surendranath and Noorjehan deivered the immortal song of all times.Awaz de kaha hai... that has no parallel. The film had many hit songs. In the same filmSurendra gave out the haunting melody kyo yaad arahe hain. Only Surendra could sing that song in his famous voice and style. No doubt he was called saigal of Bombay. many even today mistake the singer as saiga sahib.Sadly after Gawaiah Surendra stopped singing once for all and lovers of good music remained loosers.

Dr K Prabhakar Rao

Surendra gave out some very good songs in Gawiah 1954. The song Teriyad ka deepak Jalta hai was one of the best songs of the great surendranath. His way of singing was entirely different nad only Surendra could do that. Talat also sang this song with different lyrics. But Surendra was Surendra. His version was very much liked by all. No doubt Surendra is immortal.

Dr K Prabhakar rao

Surendra also gave best songs in Gawaiah. these are ..1. Teriyad ka deepak Jalta Hai.,2. Nazar se Jab ye nazar mili hai.. 3. Hamari aankho se dil ke tukde ab aasu ban kar nikal rahe hain.. These songs are extremely good and with such fine performance great Surendra called a good bye as singer to a thankless world. He is immortal with his songs.

The music video of the song features the film leads Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Preity Zinta. The song was featured in Outlook's list of Bollywood's Timeless Melodies, making it the only contemporary selection on the list.[1] It has become one of the most famous filmi songs of all time.[2]

The title track of Kal Ho Naa Ho directed by Nikhil Advani and written by Karan Johar, the music video features Aman (played by Shah Rukh) imagining himself in Rohit's (Saif Ali) place, romancing Naina (Zinta), and wistfully sings of life's unpredictability and making the most of life.

Sonu Nigam was busy when the song was to be recorded. Instead of opting for some other singer, Karan Johar decided to wait for a month before Sonu came back and recorded the song for the movie.[5] In a later interview, Nigam said:[6]

The song was featured in Outlook magazine's 20 Best Hindi Film Songs Ever list. The jury was composed of celebrities such as Gulzar, Hariharan, Javed Akhtar, Kumar Sanu and Shantanu Moitra. Each jury member was asked to nominate 10 favorites and the songs the winners were ranked according to the number of votes each song got. "Kal Ho Naa Ho" was ranked at 19 making it the only contemporary selection in the list.[8]

The song became immensely popular among Telugu audiences after an episode of Bigg Boss Telugu, Season 4 where Mehaboob Shaikh, a popular contestant, was eliminated, when, before leaving, he performed on the song.

The audio of this song is great, and so far I have not yet talked about the picturisation. It is picturised on Vyjyantimala, arguably the most accomplisher dancer of all time among leading ladies of Bollywood, and her dance in this song is simply out of this world.
