As a Healthy Forest Conservation Intern, most of my time at the Green Mountain Audubon Center was spent in their Forestry for the Birds Demonstration site. This site is an evolving, living display of how silviculture practices with birds in mind can produce sustainable, diverse landscapes. In the demonstration forest you can see patch cuts, single tree crop release, and girdling techniques used to open the canopy. These forest management practices allow the forest to restore its structural diversity by providing space and light for the understory and midstory to regenerate and grow into a complex structure.

Prior to beginning our main lessons of creating our special birds, we will have a few start up lessons where we learn how to make eyes and faces. We will begin by helping you prepare for making eyeballs (for the crow) and faces (for the owl and bird with human face). I will show you an easy way to make faces for your sculptures. It is a good idea to make several faces as samples to decide the features you like best. These are just practice faces so paint the faces freely. We will experiment with color. It is good to have several pairs of clay eyeballs on hand for making your birds. I keep a bowl full of them at all times. They make me happy!

In your first sculpture lesson, we will start off by creating wire legs (used for all birds in this course) and an armature for your birds. You will apply clay to this armature. In addition you will learn how to sculpt a human face on your bird. You will learn how to paint the human face in a painterly fashion (have fun with color and details!). This lesson will give you a lot of opportunities to be creative! You can choose what type of ears to create, how to paint the face, and more! You will just love your little bird with a sweet, loving face!

I began taking online art classes, met Kara Strachan Bullock, and took almost all of the workshops she hosted at her local studio. I was in heaven to have this new friend and later her wonderful studio located less than 20 minutes from home! I also continued online courses and one had a particularly awesome affect on my art journey. It was taught by Jeanne-Marie Webb called "the soulbearers". I would never in a million years have expected to fall in love with sculpting clay! When working with clay I felt peace and joy unlike anything ever before experienced. I have not put it down in four years and continue to find great pleasure in creating with clay. It is my 'go to' art medium. I create purely from the heart having had no formal sculpting education and somehow I am afraid to pursue the art of sculpting in a formal way because I am afraid it would ruin the freedom with which I create. I hope to spread the joy of creating in clay, something that young and old, beginner and experienced can enjoy. I hope you can experience the feeling i heard in my granddaughter's comment recently when she said, "Grandma, I am so happy making this (clay sculpture). It is the most wonderful thing I have ever made."

This weekend, i was raking leaves, washing, ironing and yes, attempting to bake 2 of my favorite breads for this site, all with a red cheeks and flu. And obviously something went wrong, as it will when you are scatterbrained when baking, (which i am not the best at any day). The sourdough was flat and the bread turned hard as stone. The other, my spiced butternut squash bread was dry and crumbled, when it came out of the oven. It made for very happy birds and me feeling silly, so the recipes and picture will wait another week.

Love the pail! It is exactly as I had envisioned. The pail is holding three 5lb bags of hulled bird seed and shelled peanuts and a small bag of suet nuggets as well as a scoop and a flat, plastic container of everything pre-mixed for my bird feeder. The cover does have a couple of blemishes - either dents or slight bulges - which is surprising as it was packaged extremely well and took forever to remove from the delivery box. It is doing the job. Perfect height and width. Fits perfectly in the corner of my kitchen and is keeping the bird food and any accompanying smells concealed from bears and mice. Very happy. Love that the pail also has a carry handle. Nice touch.

I am very happy with the seed. I received a subscription as a gift and have since subscribed myself. I was having a problem attracting birds and Susan was very helpful with suggestions of seed variety and helpful tips.

Ok, that might not be how the saying goes. The truth is we care about birds, people, and the planet and therefore use only paper product bags, recyclable boxes, and fully compostable transparent pouches.

I very rarely leave reviews, but had such a positive experience with this product that I had to share. I received a subscription as a gift and am blown away. Have tried many different seed mixes over the last year and nothing comes close to this product. Within 2 hours of switching to Happy Birdwatcher's blend, I had dozens of blue jays, cardinals and other beautiful, singing birds in my yard that I had never seen before with other seed mixes.
