Think of it this way: Imagine there’s a busy highway near a town that leads directly to the school. The town decides to create a bike lane for kids, ensuring safety measures are in place. While this is helpful, the bike lane still runs next to a high-speed roadway, posing inherent risks. In contrast, another town builds a bike lane that leads to the school but is completely separate from traffic, designed specifically for children’s safety from the beginning. Which would you prefer for your students?
The same principle applies to AI tools. If a product was built for adults and then modified for students, potential risks—such as data privacy concerns or inappropriate content—may still exist. However, if a tool was designed for students from the ground up, it is much more likely to have strong protections in place.
To ensure that an AI tool protects student data, check whether it complies with COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act) and FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act). These regulations are designed to safeguard student information and limit how companies can collect and use data.

FERPA protects student education records and controls how schools share information with third parties.
A trustworthy AI tool should clearly state its compliance with these laws and be transparent about its data policies.
Look for AI tools that give educators and students control over the data being collected. Transparency is key—does the company clearly explain how the AI works, what data it collects, and how that data is used? Tools that allow educators to customize settings and limit data collection are preferable.
Before adopting an AI tool, research the company behind it. Do they have a strong commitment to student privacy and ethical AI practices? Are they responsive to educator concerns? A company’s history and reputation can tell you a lot about whether they truly prioritize student safety.
Finally, test the tool yourself. Explore its features, look for potential pitfalls, and assess whether it aligns with your educational goals. If possible, involve other educators or IT staff in evaluating its safety and effectiveness.
AI has the potential to transform education, but selecting the right tool is critical. By prioritizing student safety, privacy compliance, and ethical design, educators can confidently integrate AI into their classrooms while ensuring a secure and enriching learning experience. Always choose the bike lane built for students—not the one squeezed next to a highway.
