Internship Paper
Las Maravillas de Guillain-Barré
This resource is a research paper based on my experience during my internship abroad. I worked on the physical therapy floor of the local hospital in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. I was able to see a variety of patients, backgrounds, health issues, and physical therapy treatments. Meanwhile, expanding my Spanish vocabulary, fluency, and conversational skills. My first patient, a man with Guillain-Barré Syndrome was most memorable of all. I had never heard of the disease, but I was inspired by his story and how he dealt with his recovery. In this paper, I showcase the details of Guillain-Barré syndrome, what it consists of, how it is being treated, and how we can better improve on taking care of this rare but serious illness. I was able to learn about this rare disease and the role it is currently playing in the Spanish health system. Furthermore, it made me more interested in the neurological field of physical therapy and better prepared me for treating rare diseases in my professional future.
