Hello! I am Hank Knight. I recently moved to Spokane, Washington, from Louisville, Kentucky, where I taught high school and middle school Visual Arts for over 8 years. I am excited to get back into the classroom, helping students grow their knowledge and skills and create amazing works of art!
When I'm not working, I love to practice kung fu, read, travel, go on hikes, and cook.
Students learn best from teachers who care. I view my students as people first and strive to lead with respect, understanding, and a little humor. I prioritize building positive relationships by having conversations with students, fostering student voice and choice, and celebrating their unique identities.
Art is for everyone. Not all of my students will become professional artists, but all young people benefit from practicing the creativity and critical thinking skills necessary to create artwork. My goal is to guide students through the process of ideation, creation, reflection, and revision, while teaching authentic skills and techniques, so that every one of them can create something they are proud of.
The more we explore, the more we grow. I challenge students to experiment with new materials and techniques, expanding their toolboxes and possibly discovering a new passion. I encourage students to play and have fun, and be unafraid of failure, because I want them to experience the joy of creation. I introduce them to artists of the past and present so that they can see the richness of our visual culture. And I continue to learn new techniques, artists, and approaches alongside them so that I can grow in my own practice as a teacher and artist.
