About NJROTC

About Our NJROTC

At Hanford West NJROTC we are big on our sense of community; being a "home away from home." We have lots of fun while still putting a lot of emphasis on developing team players, and tomorrows leaders. From the moments cadets walk into their first day we begin showing them how to use their strengths and weaknesses to their advantages so they may build the best version of themselves.

The last three years have been a complete roller coaster, with our last year that our unit ran at full power was 2019!!! since then we've lost two instructors been shut down for over a year  and had all our programs diminished, but this year we like to think "New year new Unit" Chief Gallego came to us in 2022 and with the help of our incredible cadets with their hard work along with the foundations set by last years cadets we're almost completely back on our feet!

                    History of the program

The NJROTC program was established by Public Law in 1964 and may be found in Title 10, U.S. Code Chapter 102. Instructors are retired Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard officers and enlisted personnel who conduct the program at accredited secondary schools throughout the nation. The NJROTC curriculum emphasizes citizenship and leadership development, as well as our maritime heritage, the significance of sea power, and Naval topics such as the fundamentals of Naval operations, seamanship, navigation and meteorology. Classroom instruction is augmented throughout the year by community service activities, military drill competition, field meets, flights, marksmanship training, visits to naval activities, and other military training. The Navy provides uniforms, textbooks, training aids, travel allowance, and a substantial portion of the instructor’s salaries.

Seniors in the unit make up the cadet staff, we are expected to be the example and make sure that the unit is running efficiently and effectively. We replicate a chain of command much like the actual Navy. Each person in our staff has a specific job and title. The head cadet in charge is our Company Commander who is Cadet Lieutenant Commander Johnathan Thomas. We have 7 excellent teams that persist and thrive for perfection. These team compete in many competitions as well as preform at many local events as well. These teams are Detail, Color Guard, Academics, Armed and Unarmed drill team, Rifle, and Sports. Aside from teams, Our unit usually has around 2 educational field trips, and 1 annual Cadet Ball. We also have an annual inspection called the Area 11 "Annual Military Inspection" or A.M.I. where our unit is inspected by a retired Naval Commander, or the Area 11 Manager, Commander Garcia. We have 1 instructors, NSI AOC Mitchell Gallego or just "Chief". Both are retired Navy personnel who are teaching us and helping run the unit itself. Our unit is a "Company" meaning we consist of around 90-130 Cadets at a time. N.J.R.O.T.C meaning: Naval Junior Reserves Officer Training Corps, is a elective class here at Hanford West High School that teaches responsibility, leadership and NAVY core values, honor courage and commitment. In our NJROTC program, students are issued a uniform free of charge and they are asked to wear it every Thursday unless otherwise posted. NJROTC is a program for which students could have fun, learn new skills and knowledge necessary for success in the future. As an Naval Science 1 student, you will learn the basics of NJ, such as how and why we wear a uniform, vital leadership and marching skills, and a few other basics of the program. As you go on through the years in NJROTC, you gain knowledge and experience regarding military customs.
