Immediately call 911 when there is an emergency
Check if the scene is safe - you can only help the person if you are safe
Check the patient for responsiveness, breathing, and pulse
Begin hands-only CPR if the patient is unresponsive, unconscious, is not breathing, and has no pulse
If the person you are performing hands-only CPR on dies, you are protected by the Good Samaritan Law
If you are tired (CPR can be very tiring!), see if someone at the scene can take over the compressions
Hearing cracking is totally normal
A person suddenly collapses
The person is not responding
No signs of breathing (chest is not rising)
Absence of pulse
Chest discomfort
Discomfort in other parts of the body
Pain radiates from chest to arms, back, neck, jaw, or stomach
Shortness of breath
Other signs
Sweating
Nausea
Irregular heartbeat
Tiredness
Lightheadedness
