Resources & Professional Development For Teachers

ACTFL is a national membership community of language education professionals passionate about expanding cultural richness and diversity at all levels of education. It provides resources to address challenges to meet the changing needs of language educators and their learners. 

ACTFL’s Leadership Initiative for Language Learning - a program to “empower individuals to become agents for change, in order to foster a growth mindset focused on effective teaching and learning, and purposeful nurturing of leadership skills, all in the service of learners.”

The Southwest Conference on Language Teaching is a regional world language teachers' organization that hosts an annual conference in partnership with state world language teacher associations. The participating states in SWCOLT are Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawai‘i, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah. 

This organization focuses on advocacy efforts for language learning.

The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) at the University of Minnesota has provided high-quality professional development for language teachers for over 25 years. Launched in 1996, this internationally known program reflects CARLA's commitment to link research and theory with practical applications for the classroom. Each institute is highly interactive and includes discussion, hands-on activities, and networking. 

Founded in 1917, the AATSP is among the oldest and largest language-specific professional associations in the US. It hosts an annual conference, houses two academic journals, and offers a wide variety of programs for Spanish and Portuguese language educators and students at all levels.

The Hawaii Association of Teachers of Japanese is a non-profit professional organization devoted to the education of Japanese language and culture for K-16 and life.  

AFH’s goal is to encourage the study of French language and culture in Hawaii . It also encourages and funds programs to enable students and teachers from Hawaii to study in France or French-speaking countries. 

Hawai‘i Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is a local professional organization for ESL professionals. Its goals are to create a community of ESL professionals and provide them with professional development.
