U.S. Goat Population and Trends
In its 2021 Sheep and Goat Report, the USDA reported roughly 2,582,000 total goats in the U.S., of which 79.2% (2,045,000) are meat goats, 16.3% (420,000) are milk goats, and 4.5% (117,000) are Angora goats.
Over the past 15 years, the meat goat population in the U.S. has hovered around 2 million heads. The population of meat goats in Minnesota has remained around 25,000 heads for the past 10 years. In 2021, Minnesota contained only 1.25% the national population of goats.
