My Role: Researcher, Writer, and Lead designer
A substantial and impressive collection of nearly 500 artworks, many from renowned American and European artists spanning the last four centuries, the Stottlemyer Collection exceeded our expectations. The remarkable story of how this collection transformed a college gallery into a respected museum is told in a forthcoming catalog, available this October
Quayton Stottlemyer ‘51 in the spring of 1996 initiated a discussion with Dr. Karen Rosell, asking if Juniata would be interested in owning his father’s art collection. Soon after, the College began acquiring the collection, which was recently appraised at more than one million dollars. While we rotate the artworks on display, most of them are held in secure, climate-controlled storage. Yet this amazing array of works has deserved to be researched, catalogued and publicized.
The Stottlemyer Collection: A Journey, compiled and edited by Karen J. Rosell (with Amy E. Mathur) is available to pre-order at a discount. What makes this catalog unique is that twelve students in art history and museum studies chose artworks that most interested them, conducted research, and wrote entries along with Professor Rosell. Three students worked on the graphic design, and former colleagues and alumni contributed their memories of, and experiences with, the collection. Providing the opportunity for many more works to be researched, this catalog should help attract students to Juniata for museum studies, one of only about a dozen such undergraduate programs in the nation.
