Research Services

Haiming is the Chair of the Karen Spärck Jones Award. Haiming is a membership secretary of BCS Information Retrieval Special Group (BCS-IRSG). Haiming has organized a large number of conferences, workshops and symposium as a programme chair, tutorial chair, workshop chair, doctoral symposium chair, session chair and panel session, such as ECIR, CHIIR, BIRDS, ICTIR, FDIA, CIKM, JCDL etc. Haiming is an associate editor for “International Journal for Digital Libraries (IJDL)”. She has also been a member of programme committee for many world-leading conferences and reviewer for prestigious journals, such as SIGIR, ECIR, CHIIR, ICTIR, SIGIR-AP, JCDL, TOIS, JASIST, IJDL, IIiX, ICMR, CIKM, BIR, ACM MM, etc. Haiming has given many talks including keynote speeches at conferences and institutions nationally and internationally, for example, she gave a keynote talk at the 2014 Enterprise Search Europe, and at the 2017 Information Retrieval and Foraging Autumn School at Schloss Dagstuhl, attended by around 30 international PhD and Master students, and at the 2020 International Conference on Information Management, etc.

Knowledge Transfer to Industry

Haiming has considerable knowledge and experience in working with SMEs. She has worked with many SMEs on consultancy projects that were funded by UK Technology Strategy Board (TSB), EU Regional Development Fund and local councils. For example, Haiming successfully completed an innovation voucher project with Deepnet Security on risk analysis for online crime, which is funded by TSB; she has completed over 20 consultancy projects with SMEs such as Me Learning, Tacit Sims and North27, etc. for Innovation Bridge project and ICT Escalator Project, which are funded by EU Regional Development Fund and the local councils. Apart from working with the SMEs, Haiming has also been working on knowledge transfer projects with museums, namely Bletchley Park and Luton Culture. For example, Haiming worked on how to engage students to learn code breaking with Bletchley Park using computer games; she also worked on user-centred information access for digitised WWI data and using virtual reality technology to enhance students’ learning during their visit at Luton Culture museums.  Haiming is also a member of Biztech management board, which is a business networking hub for business digital skill development.
