Dr Haiming Liu

Dr Haiming Liu is an Associate Professor in the Web and Internet Science (WAIS) research group of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at University of Southampton (Soton) in the UK, where she undertakes research, project supervision and teaching of both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Prior to joining Soton, Haiming worked as a senior lecturer at School of Computer Science and Technology of University of Bedfordshire (UoB) in the UK, a lecturer at the School of Computing, Engineering and Physical Sciences of University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in the UK, and as a user experience developer at Knowledge Media Institute, The Open University (OU) in the UK. Haiming completed her PhD at the Knowledge Media Institute (KMi), The Open University (UK) in 2010. Her thesis was on understanding user interaction with content-based image retrieval (CBIR) systems from three aspects: a user interaction model, an interactive interface and users.

Haiming's research focus is on user-centred Interactive multimedia and multimodal information access. This research focus is very interdisciplinary, which involves disciplines such as Computer Science, Information Science, Data Science, Information Retrieval, Psychology, Social Science, Biology and Creative Technologies. Further the application of the research outcomes are multidisciplinary, for example, E-learning, E-commerce, E-Health, E-government and Digital Humanities. Through this research, Haiming has developed her expertise in designing and developing multimedia and multimodal information seeking and searching systems, theory-based user modelling based on user interaction data including bio-sensor data, user experience and interaction design and development, Human-Computer-Interaction (HCI), Information Foraging Theory, Emotions Theory and Cross-Cultural Theory.

Haiming enjoys running and travelling especially sightseeing on foot. She participates half marathons/marathons annually. She likes to visit different countries and places to see different scenery and to experience different cultures. She loves to spend time with her daughters including taxing them to their clubs.
