2017 Henry Kyd Douglas Award
The 2016-2017 Henry Kyd Douglas award recipient was George Franks. Frank Bell enumerated George's many accomplishments and activities. In his acceptance, George said he was "totally thrown off base" when he was notified. George studied history at the Naval Academy and the University of Pittsburgh. He was an officer, governor, and president of a company of military historians. He was also president of the Capitol Hill Civil War Round Table of Washington, DC. In 2013, George published Battle of Falling Waters 1863. Custer, Pettigrew and the End of the Gettysburg Campaign. In 2015 he was given the John Frye Historic Advocacy Award. In addition, George is the founder and president of the Battle of Falling Waters 1863 Foundation. George is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area, serves on the C&O Canal Federal Advisory Commission, is active with the Save Historic Antietam Foundation, and the Civil War Trust. George encouraged HCWRT members to get involved in battlefield preservation, one way or another, either with the Civil War Trust or a local preservation organization. George specified the Falling Waters 1863 Foundation as the recipient for the S100 stipend that accompanies the award.

The Hagerstown Civil War Round Table presented Steven C. French with its 2016 Henry Kyd Douglas Award.
French, a former middle-school teacher, is the author of “Imboden’s Brigade in the Gettysburg Campaign” (2008), which was recognized with three prestigious awards; “Rebel Chronicles: Raiders, Scouts, and Train Robbers of the Upper Potomac” (2012); and a monograph, “The Jones-Imboden Raid against the B&O Railroad at Rowlesburg, Virginia” (2001).
He has also written more than 80 historical articles and book reviews for The Washington Times, Gettysburg Magazine, North & South Magazine, Crossfire: The Magazine of the American Civil War Round Table (U.K.) and The Southern Cavalry Review, among other publications, and appeared in Internet and TV documentaries, including “The Civil War in Washington County, Maryland.”
He frequently speaks to groups and leads Civil War tours throughout the four-state area.
His next book, “Phantoms of the South Fork: Captain McNeill and His Rangers,” will be published by Kent State University Press in 2017.
