When most people think of an alcoholic, they usually think of those who are visible to the eyes. They don't usually associate a functional alcoholic with a depressed drunken alcoholic, but they do suffer from the same disease, which is: alcoholism. Functional alcoholics are common in the workplace, in your social environment, and in relationships. Most functional alcoholics believe that if they have a drink a few days a week, what the harm; they can control matter, matter has no control over them. But one drink leads to another and then another; until eventually a functional alcoholic is now an alcoholic who has lost control of his or her life.

Many people have seen their friends and relatives ruin their lives because of the craving for the taste of alcohol. There's nothing wrong with having a casual drink with friends and family every now and then. However, the problem arises when the individuals can visualize themselves and feel that they are tasting the alcohol to the point where it satisfies their hunger.

Like most people, I have seen many people in the workplace having lunch and drinking alcohol, and when they come back they behave in a professional manner. They carry out their tasks to perfection. Anyone from the outside looking in will never know that those individuals are functional alcoholics; until they're right in their faces and the smell of the drink just comes out of their breath.

There is always that one person who drinks alone, and no one knows their story but the people who live with them. People at work have no idea what's going on outside their coworker's life. But there are individuals who have their drinking buddies at work, and there is usually one from the group who over time the alcohol gets the better of them. There are many evenings in the bars and one night stands for them. It's harrowing but true.

I remember a situation that is very fresh in my mind, because of the sympathy I felt for that particular person. He came to work every day; there was nothing that seemed strange to him. He is seen as a knowledgeable man who does his best to help others. When his department is understaffed, he is the first to take on the responsibilities of his colleagues. He is admired by many people.
However, his drinking got the better of him and everyone saw the change in his behavior and the way he behaved. I remember one day being late for work, I saw several people waiting for the elevator, and when the doors opened, I ran inside. When people saw him in the elevator, they didn't go in. But I didn't understand why. The elevator doors closed and it felt like the smell of the alcohol that had just been released into my face. My smell was so strong that all I could do was put my head down and pray that the doors would open soon. Of course I said good morning to him, for he is a pleasant man. But like most functional alcoholics, they don't see the disease taking control of their minds and bodies until it's too late.
Fortunately, his boss took care of that particular person and encouraged him to seek professional help. He eventually went to a rehabilitation center and got his life back on track. I would like to point out that there was a time when no one knew he had a drinking problem because he hid it so well. It wasn't until his drinking got out of hand that everyone noticed the change. But there are cases that don't end well for everyone.
For some individuals, the alcohol has defeated them; they are no longer the people you knew before the alcohol disease controlled them. Those individuals have reached the final stage of alcoholism, where they cannot hide that they are no longer functional alcoholics, but have become alcoholics. I believe that what is done in the dark will eventually come into the light. At some point, what a person is trying to hide will become visible to everyone. Alcoholism is a disease that does not pass easily because the urge to drink will always be there if there is a setback in their life. And that's when those individuals need to stay mentally strong.
It was reported that "high-functioning alcoholics rarely recognize they have a problem until they are confronted with serious alcohol-related consequences. The danger of high-functioning alcoholism is that it can go on for years without anyone ever realizing they have a problem". It's debatable that part of the reason so many functional alcoholics are in denial is that excessive drinking in society is considered acceptable by most people. The legality of alcohol gives some people the impression that they can drink as much as they want because alcohol is legal. Most people don't think about the aftermath, they just think about how the alcohol makes them feel at that moment, and that's part of the problem. Ultimately, being a functional alcoholic may be one step away from becoming an alcoholic.
