Goal Statement:
In the coming five years, I intend to continue my position as the School Library Media Specialist with East Forsyth Middle School. Within the frame of my role, I am continuing to seek opportunities to obtain professional development as well as share professional development with my colleagues within the building, region, and state. In terms of collection building, I am dedicated to bring greater representation to our collection. One of the areas of highest need is our language inclusive resources as a dual language immersion program and as a building where over 40% of our learners speak a language other than Englist as their first language, I recognize the importance and impact of increasing this representation for our students. As a professional completing my Masters degree, I will be actively seeking to become more involved in regional, state, and national professional orgnaizations.
While I am not certain of a completion timeline, I am also committed to researching, presenting, and drafting articles surrounding the idea of bringing more trauma-informed librarianship into all aspects of school library programs. This is something that has recently struck a chord of need within me as I examined who intentionally media specialists/librarians seek to include this lens in literature collections, but also how often we forget to include it in some of our more difficult tasks and student interactions. It is a personal moment of reflection as well as a professional goal to expand this knowledge and create simple practices that allow school library media specialists to act with compassion first even in a challenging situation.
