Gynecomastia is the medical term for a generally benign development of the mammary gland of the male to the female type. An increase in mammary glands (and not excess fatty tissue) is the cause. Hormonal changes in Men

Normal hormonal changes are the most common cause of breast development in newborns, boys and men. Some conditions result in enlarged breasts in men. Sometimes changes occur in the number of hormones, causing the man to develop gynecomastia. Infants

The neonate receives gynecomastia through exposure to estrogen from the mother. More than half of the young babies are born in the world with enlarged breasts. Puberty

In teenagers, breast growth results from normal hormonal changes that occur in puberty. Fifty to seventy percent of boys develop breasts during puberty. Also this breast growth usually disappears within about six months to two years.

Adults

In men, hormonal changes happen as a result of aging which possibly leads to breast development. This is more common in overweight men and in about one in four men who are fifty years and older.

Diagnostic Research

Differential diagnosis

Treatment of breast growth or breast development in men

Often a treatment is not required because breast growth disappears spontaneously in newborns and adolescents. Pain relief and cold packs reduce pain.
