DC involves following and learning how to play songs with various percussion instruments. DC will focus as well upon playing these instruments in a synchronized manner in various formations. Other focuses will be about the aspects on the importance of working with other members as a team.
"In Drum Corps we learn how to play musical percussion instruments along with the xylophone to make songs and formations, a lot like a drum lines in colleges. We learn how to make songs by collaborating the sound of the percussion with the sound of the xylophone and sync our music to our formations. We have an annual competition in the Spring to compete against other JROTC Drum Corps all around the city to show off the effort and hard work we put into the team for the whole year." -C/LTC Boden Zhou, Drum Corps Commander SY 2013-2014
The Exhibition Drill Team (formerly the Girls Drill Team, or GDT) is one of the many extra-curricular activities and special teams in JROTC. The drills consist of hand coordination, which is incorporated with songs and stomping. The team choreographs sequences and create original lyrics to compete in the annual Spring Competition against other schools while also performing at many parades and events. Cadets also develop better speaking skills, confidence, and passion to strive for excellence within this team. The members of drill team have a strong bond, almost as if they are a family. Like other JROTC teams, the team participates in parades and volunteer activities in preparation for the Annual Spring Review Competition.
"Whatever place we get, the real trophy is having a team like this"
"Endless hours of practice for 6 minutes of perfection, leaving with you a lifetime of glory."
The Flag Team, or FT (formerly Boys Drill Team, or BDT) was descended from the Rifle Team, which was discontinued in 1994 by the San Francisco Unified School District. So instead of using rifles, the Flag Team drills with metal poles with flags. They participate in city-wide parades such as Chinese New Year, Veteran's Day, Saint Patrick's Day, and many more social events within the JROTC community. The team also competes in the Annual Spring Review Competition in the spring semester to show how far they've grown as a team and as individuals. Flag Team drills in silence, without verbal commands. Within the drill sequences, they make formations and perform various movements with their flags, including spins and ripples.
"Literally through blood, sweat, and tears, we have finally placed in the Annual Spring Drill Competition in over a decade. I have seen each and everyone of my kids grow from Day 1 and would be honored to continue watching them grow, I can say this a million times and it would not lose meaning, but I'm proud to be called your commander. I'm proud of my boys." -Karbo Tam, Flag Team Commander SY 2013-2014
