JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) is a high school program that specializes in teaching leadership and responsibility. Cadets in this program participate in countless volunteer events for the school, as well as the city. Students may take this class in place of Physical Education for twice the course credits. JROTC is commonly misconceived as a military recruitment program, which is far from the true goal of this class. Its goal is to allow young students to build leadership skills along with personal responsibility. The mission statement of JROTC is "To motivate young people to become better citizens."
The Eagles Battalion was established in 1936 and is a part of the SFUSD Army JROTC Brigade. The Eagles Battalion participates in many community service activities and school activities. The battalion consists of five companies and nine special teams. Each team competes during the fall and/or the spring. The program also offers excellent leadership experience, putting cadets in positions where they have to take charge and learn how to make wise decisions. Cadets also learn about the bill of rights, the constitution, land navigation/map reading, dining etiquette, nutrition information, drugs and alcohol awareness, traditional drill, physical fitness standards, teamwork, loyalty, patriotism, initiative, dedication, and much, much more. All students are welcomed, regardless of their background. Everyone in the Eagles Battalion is treated as a part of our family. We will always help our cadets with whatever academic, moral, or social struggles to ensure them an enjoyable high school experience within this class as well as others. from the JROTC Brigade Website
