The mission of our Girls Who Code chapter is to provide education, resources, comradery, and mentorship for girls who want to get involved with computer science and technology.
Our core values include:
Sisterhood
Resilience
Intellectual curiosity
Over the past several years, our club has held 8-week Saturday morning sessions twice a year, with hands-on coding projects and lessons in technologies such as:
Basic web development in HTML and JavaScript
Game development with MIT Scratch and microStudio
Software and game development with the Python programming language
At the start of each meeting, we spotlight a notable and inspirational woman in various STEM fields, including disciplines such as:
Medicine
Computer science
Aerospace engineering
Chemistry
Biology
We also have regularly discuss emerging and impactful topics in the computer science world, such as artificial intelligence.
Through a combination of technical education and inspirational role models, we have helped young girls and ladies expand their horizons about what they can possibly achieve!
Participants can gain quite a bit from engaging with our GWC club. We offer:
A fun, safe environment to learn basic and advanced computer science and programming skills. Computer science can be a very challenging field, but with the proper approach and environment that our club provides, it can also be fun and rewarding!
Perspectives on possible careers in computer science and other STEM fields. We do weekly profiles on STEM superstars, which can inspire our members to explore new career path ideas.
An extracurricular activity to add to a college application. When college application time comes around, students will want to have an extracurricular list that demonstrates commitment, leadership and a clear dedication to a particular interest or passion. Sustained participation in our GWC club can be a great addition to a student's college application!
