Meet The Founders

Establishing a Team

Lauren Smith and Sara Davis are two women who have experienced what rugby had done for many, creating a sense of unity and acceptance, prior to establishing the Greenville Grizzlies. These experience players came together with similar desires: they wanted to bring a female rugby team to the Upstate. Greenville's rugby community had already been established as it has a couple of high school teams and an adult male team: The Greenville Griffins; however, the women's portion of the club folded in 2011. Therefore, Smith and Davis set out by going door-to-door, spreading the word through media outlets, and preaching the three pillars of the Grizzlies: community, camaraderie, and competition. The end result has been the Greenville Women's Rugby.

Lauren Smith

Smith, 25, is a transplant from Upstate New York with over 7 years of experience playing with clubs along the east coast, including both Oneonta and Asheville Women's Rugby teams before forming the Greenville team. She mostly plays as a Back in the Flyhalf position.

When she isn't playing, Lauren works as an 8th Grade English Language Arts teacher in the local area of Greenville. She also enjoys going to breweries and attending concerts across the country. She's an avid cook, reader, and athlete.
