The harmonium scale: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa
The image below shows the starting Sa for Male and Female scales.
The notes with the lines beneath are called komal and those with the dot on top are known as teevra. These will become important later, but for now focus on the normal scale. Try to match your voice with the note as you play.
Once you understand the scale, practise the following exercises to understand how to move between notes.
Exercise 1:
Go up: S R G M P D N Ṡ
Back down: Ṡ N D P M G R S
Exercise 2:
Alternate notes: S G R M G P M D P N D Ṡ
Back down: Ṡ D N P D M P G M R G S
Exercise 3:
In 3s: SRG RGM GMP MPD PDN DNS
Back down: SND NDP DPM PMG MGR GRS
Once you feel comfortable with the scale and exercises. Try this very simple Waheguru Simran - just follow along with the video!
Note that we introduce the komal Dha and Ga, the komal note is the note just before the standard one. So where you would normally play the Dha, you play the note before instead.
The teerva notes (with the dot above) are the higher scale. So the Sa at the end of the scale is actually the start of the teerva notes and is denoted as Ṡ.
