Learning essential skills
“Learning should be connected to children’s own lives and experienced as a meaningful whole so that children can connect new ideas to what they already know.”

As soon as children start at Guildford Nursery School, they learn how to chop, spread and peel.
Adults guide the children but allow them the freedom of actually taking on the task.
We sing songs as we chop, spread and peel to teach and remind the children what to do.
Referring to chopping:
Tune of Row, row.
(Referring to the use of a dog knife)
Chop, chop, chop your _________ (banana),
With the teeth pressed down.
Hold the knife and give it a push,
I wonder what you found?
Referring to Spreading:
Tune of I had a little turtle.
I had some bread and butter,
I also had a knife,
I spread the butter on the bread,
To make it yummy and nice.
Spreading, spreading, spreading,
Spreading, spreading, spreading,
(slow down voice) Spreading, spreading, stop!
Referring to peeling:
Tune of Twinkle, twinkle.
Peeling, peeling, peel away,
Keeps you safe and your fingers OK.
Peel away and see inside,
Discover treasures with your eyes.
Peeling, peeling peel away,
Keeps you safe and your fingers OK.
