The children plant and care for fruit and vegetables which they then use in their cooking. This helps them understand where food comes from. They see for themselves how an onion seed grows into a plant from which they can harvest raw onions. These raw whole onions are then peeled, chopped and cooked. This helps them understand how food can be changed and used in a recipe.
Froebel believed that learning should be experienced as a meaningful whole.
