I don't want to beat a dead horse, but we all knew the MCU had some problems creating compelling villains back in the day and GotG suffers a lot from this. Ronan motivations come from a 'war' that we, the audience, have absolutely no reference to. Captain Marvel and GotG give us some clues about this war and why it motivates Ronan, but never enough that we actually feel something for him. As a result, he has almost no connection to the main cast. The only people who even know about him are Gamora and Drax. Gamora feels personally responsible for Ronan having acquired the Power Stone and feels morally obligated to stop him, which is a reasonable motivation, but it just isn't very compelling, I don't think. Drax is the only one with an emotional connection to Ronan and their confrontation in knowhere was maybe the only time that Ronan felt effective as a villain to me. The rest of the gang just sorta go along with the plan to stop ronan because as Quill said they're "one of the idiots who live in [the galaxy]". Ronan's inefficiency as a villain is a result of the themes of Guardians of the Galaxy being a little less cohesive than the themes of the sequel.
