Our Study Procedures

Your participation in this study involves three parts: the completion of pre-session tasks, the in-home game session, and the narration task.

Pre-Session Tasks

Before we come to your home, we will schedule a video conference call with your group to explain the study in detail. We will describe exactly what will happen during the in-home session and how we protect the privacy of you and your group. Your group is welcome to ask any questions and voice any concerns about the study. Then, if you decide to continue with the study, we will send each group member a consent form to give us their voluntary permission to participate in our study.

After signing the consent form, group members will complete pre-session questionnaires. These are: a demographics form, which gives general information about each group member; a personality assessment; a hearing loss questionnaire; and a short training video and survey, which provides information about the recording devices used during the session and reviews key information about the in-home session. Each group member will be compensated $15 for completing the pre-session tasks.

In-Home Session

Members of our study team will meet you and your group at the home of one of your group members. We will provide the game for you to play as well as all the recording devices that you will wear during the session. We will set up the devices and provide your group with a laptop, which will connect your group with our team via a Zoom call. You may communicate with us through this call.

Once you and your group members are outfitted with the wearable recording devices, you will play the games inside your home. You are encouraged to have snacks and beverages while playing the games. In addition to the wearable devices, your session will be recorded by the laptop webcam.

During each game, you will answer some quick, online questions via survey links that will be sent to your cell phone or a tablet. These questions ask about what's happening in the game and how you are feeling while playing the game. Your in-home session will last no more than 3 hours, including the time it takes to outfit your group with the wearable devices. Each member will be compensated $60 for the in-home session.

A couple weeks after your in-home session, we will privately share the video and audio recordings with you. You will be able to securely review the recordings from your session online to flag any moments you do not want to share in the public dataset. We will remove or censor any moments you flag from the recordings.

Narration Task

Lastly, you will complete a spoken narration task. You will complete this task at home at your convenience using clips from the recordings from your session. You will complete narrations from your perspective as well as from the perspective of another group member. Your narrations should provide details about the goals, strategies, and emotions of the designated group member. You have the opportunity to narrate from more perspectives if you choose to. You will receive $15 for each perspective that you narrate. For example, you will receive $30 total for narrating from the perspective of you and one other person. If you narrate from the perspective of four people, you will receive $60 total for this task.
