Dr. Leo Liu is a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. He is also affiliated with the FSU Research Computing Center and the FSU Institute for Successful Longevity. He co-chairs the Biorheology Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC) at the International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis (ISTH). Occasionally, he serves as the RPTH Recap moderator for thrombosis and AI-focused talks!
He leads the Liu Lab, a.k.a. the Group for Living Fluids (GoLF), seeking to unravel the physical principles of blood clotting that underlie hemorrhage, heart attacks, and strokes. The Liu Lab leverages a “Supercomputing/AI-in-the-loop” approach to accelerate scientific discovery and engineering innovation through iterative coupling of computational modeling and wet-lab experiments.
Dr. Liu welcomes highly self-motivated Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers with an interest in interdisciplinary research to join the team. Interested applicants are encouraged to contact him via email.

09/07/2025 - Rukiye won the prestigious Shmuel Einav Award for Mechanobiology at the 10th International Biofluid Mechanics and Mechanobiology Symposium (IBMS10) on behalf of the Liu Lab, recognizing our ongoing research into how blood suspension rheology regulates cellular and molecular biology. IBMS, founded by Shmuel Einav and Mory Gharib at Caltech in 2003, is the most prestigious conference in the field of biofluid mechanics and mechanobiology. This year marked the inaugural presentation of the Einav Award, and Rukiye has the special honor of being its very first recipient.
05/10/2025 - Dr. Liu is awarded the prestigious 2024 Eberhard F. Mammen Young Investigator Award (YIA) for excellence in thrombosis and hemostasis. He is one of only six awardees selected worldwide, and notably, the sole recipient from the United States this year. This international recognition highlights Dr. Liu’s contributions at the intersection of blood rheology and mechanobiology. (FSU, FAMU-FSU, and FSU ISL).

01/31/2025 - Connor published his first Journal article on flow-mediated crystalization in collaboration with Sandia National Labs. Congrats, Connor!
11/26/2024 - Rukiye and Connor presented two talks at the 2024 American Physics Society Division of Fluid Dynamics (APS-DFD) in Salt Lake City, Utah, and another two talks at the 2024 APS conference southeast division.
10/05/2024 - Dr. Liu visited the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Texas Medical Branch to give an invited departmental seminar. Thanks to the invitation by Dr. Yunfeng Chen.
07/22/2024 - Connor gave a talk at the 2024 16th World Congress on Computational Mechanics and 4th Pan American Congress on Computational Mechanics in Vancouver, Canada.
07/01/2024 - Dr. Liu published an invited illustrative journal article on Shear-Induced Platelet Aggregation (SIPA) in Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis (RPTH).
06/27/2024 - Dr. Liu gave 3 talks (2 invited and 1 contributed) at the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) 2024 Congress in Bangkok, Thailand. Among the talks, he gave a plenary State-of-Art (SoA) Talk entitled "Shear-Induced Platelet Aggregation: the Hemodynamic Pathway for Occlusive Thrombosis and Hemostasis" to uncover the biophysical and biofluid mechanical pathway for shear-induced platelet aggregation (SIPA) as the mechanistic causes for heart attacks and strokes. As part of the plenary talk, Dr. Liu will join 30 world-leading researchers in thrombosis and hemostasis to draft a joint journal article.
06/11/2024 - Rukiye gave a talk at the 2024 Summer Biomechanics, Bioengineering, and Biotransport Conference (SB3C) at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
04/27/2024 - Rukiye published her first Journal article of a review on platelet biorheology and mechanobiology pertinent to heart attacks and strokes. Congratulations, Rukiye!
03/01/2024 - Congrats to JP Romero for winning an FSU IDEA grant for studying "Developing novel microfluidic chips based on 3-D printing and novel surface coating technology for cardiovascular disease applications." As 1 of the only 2 awardees from CoE out of 35 awardees from FSU who are awarded this grant, JP will work on cardiovascular device development. He will also be invited to present at the 2024 President’s Showcase of Undergrad Research Excellence.
11/15/2023 - Congrats on Dr. Liu being selected by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) as a State-of-the-Art Lecturer for the upcoming 2024 ISTH Congress meeting to happen in Bangkok, Thailand!
10/13/2023 - Dr. Liu gave 3 invited talks to the FSU College of Medicine, FSU Institute for Successful Longevity, and FSU Mechanical Engineering, respectively.
09/26/2023 - The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) has appointed Dr. Liu as the Co-Chair of the Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC) on Biorheology. This appointment is effective on 10/01/2023 and has a term of 4 years.
09/24/2023 - Our group attended the 1st Tallahassee Bioengineering Symposium. We had fun communicating our scientific findings in the field of thrombosis and hemostasis to the local community, especially to the next generations!
