Dr. Gregory Thornton, Ed. D., a native of Philadelphia, embarked on his educational journey as a student of the School District of Philadelphia. His academic pursuits led him to graduate from Overbrook High School and further his studies at Temple University in Philadelphia, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. He continued to expand his knowledge, obtaining his Master of Arts degree in Administration/Supervision at Salisbury State University in Maryland, and his Doctorate in Educational Leadership at Nova Southeastern University in Florida.
Dr. Thornton's career in education, spanning over thirty years, is a testament to his unwavering commitment to children and families. His diverse roles, from a teacher to an elementary and secondary principal, and various leadership positions, including Superintendent roles with increasing responsibilities, have all been guided by this commitment. His priorities include ensuring equity and excellence through increased student achievement, effective and efficient operations, and sustained parent and community partnerships.
Dr. Thornton's leadership positions are a testament to his extensive experience and expertise. He has served as Chief Executive Officer of Baltimore City Public Schools, Superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools and the Chester Upland School District, and Chief Academic Officer for the School District of Philadelphia. His leadership has also been felt in Montgomery County MD Public Schools and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County NC Public Schools. This wealth of experience instills confidence in his leadership.
Dr. Thornton's educational legacy is not just a professional achievement but a personal one. It continues to live on through his family: his wife, Theresa; two sons, Gregory II and Geoffrey; and three grandchildren, Rachael, Geoffrey II, and Gianna. This personal touch adds a human element to his professional journey, fostering a sense of connection and empathy.
