The skill level of the club members varies a reasonable amount. However, because it is competitive, everyone has some prior experience playing tennis whether it was through their high school team, USTA/ALTA leagues, or even up to national level tournaments. Regardless, we allow everyone to tryout and therefore encourage anyone interested to give it a shot as no harm can come from trying out!
Things you will need of your own include a tennis racket, water bottle, other tennis equipment, and your Buzzcard for identification. Balls will be provided by the team. You do NOT need to complete a physical to try out.
Everything in club tennis from the practices to tournaments to social events is optional. Although we strongly encourage and look for participation in each, there is no obligation. For this reason, club tennis is appealing as it is flexible to your desires and schedule. As an important note, because we are still a driven tennis team, we look for players that intend to be as committed as possible in coming to practices and participating in tournaments.

Yes, there are dues. Generally dues are about $200 for the entire academic year (or $110 per semester) and this covers tournament hotel costs, tournament signup fees, gas to commute to tournaments, tennis balls for practices, grips and strings for all team members, social event costs, and other miscellaneous costs.Â
The number of people taken can vary significantly and is never set in stone ahead of time. There are generally around 25-40 active members, so the captains use the existing roster count to determine a broad number of people they may take at the upcoming tryouts. Most importantly though, it depends on the skill of the players at tryouts. We usually take on more players during the Fall simply due to more people trying out for the team.
