GSE 570 (Fall '24) ~ Using AI in the Classroom: Theory and Practice

GSE 570: Selected Topics in Educational Leadership & Administration.

GSE 570 is part of the graduate program offered by the School of Education at Bishop's University in Sherbrooke, Quebec.

This course has been designed to provide the student with the opportunity to examine recent developments in educational leadership and issues related to educational administration.

This semester (Fall '24) we will focus on the implications that artificial intelligence and generative AI may/will have in educational settings from K through university. We will think about the 'big' ideas and play with selected tools developed for students, teachers, and administrators.

Course will take place on Thursday nights (5:30 to 8:29 pm) online via ZOOM. Link will be sent directly via your email.

LEARNING OUTCOMES/OBJECTIVES

We will co-create a seminar on the AI leadership challenges (positive & negative) faced by students, teachers, and administrators working in education today.

The course aims to provide teachers and administrators with a thorough introduction to using AI in schools and centres (from K to university).
I hope that by exploring potential applications and best practices for its effective use in the classroom; the students will gain the necessary knowledge and skills to embed the use of AI in their daily teaching practice.
The syllabus with readings is now available.

The course focus will depend on student background and interests with AI. We will decide this during the first class.

Course Materials

Readings from a variety of sources (books, articles, videos) will be available on Perusall and Moodle. However, there are two required books that need to be purchased --> one on Amazon Canada (#1) and one on Perusall (#2). The 3rd book is available to us thanks to our library.

Unlocking the Power of OpenAI: A Teacher's Guide by Janette Camacho. The book by Camacho must be purchased on Perusall ($10 US funds)

Teaching with AI: A Practical Guide to a New Era of Human Learning by Bowen & Watson (free courtesy university library)

Education and Technology: Key Issues and Debates by Neil Selwyn (3rd edition ~ free courtesy university library).
