The Three Peaks Challenge is an annual event traditionally organised by the UCT MBA Group, to build camaraderie and to use as a networking event for past alumni. It has become challenging for the students to organise an event they have never done, so the co-ordination of this has been taken over by a team of committed alumni and staff.
In 1979, GSB MBA student, Michael Main decided to formalise the school’s Three Peaks hike into a formal and timed event. Since then, the school has turned this test of determination and endurance into a regular tradition, with students, alumni and faculty taking to the hills en masse at least once each year ever since.
Starting in front of the GSB’s former campus (just above Marquard and Tugwell residences in Rondebosch), the route leads to the top of Devil’s Peak via the treacherous ‘Knife’s Edge’, and then across the saddle, up onto the ‘real’ Ledges of Table Mountain and on to Maclear’s Beacon. From there, participants must descend the infamous and excruciating Platteklip, and continue along Tafelberg Road – crossing Kloofnek Road for the final ascent up Lion’s Head.
The 50th anniversary was held in 2016, and the event continues to evolve with the times.
Those who manage to finish the race are rewarded with a beer, firm handshake, a pat on the back and amazing lifelong memories! The top man and woman however also get a trophy – a bronzed running shoe.
