The COVID-19 pandemic had an adverse effect on global armed conflicts. It has exacerbated existing tensions, also creating new challenges and tensions which leads to disrupt in peacebuilding activities, with consequences that are likely to persist long after the pandemic has subsided. The pandemic has led to an instant increase in conflicts in some particular regions. As a result, governments focus on conflict resolution, peacekeeping and humanitarian aid has decreased. This allows armed groups to take advantage of the situation and escalate their activities. In some cases, armed groups have used the pandemic as an opportunity to launch new attacks or expand territorial control.
The pandemic has made it difficult to resolve existing conflicts. For example, peace conferences have been disrupted or postponed due to travel restrictions and social distancing. This has delayed the progress of conflict resolution. Additionally, the pandemic has exacerbated humanitarian crises in conflict zones, with millions of people experiencing food insecurity, displacement, and limited access to healthcare. Additionally, the pandemic has highlighted existing inequalities and has also created new inequalities. This has led to an increase in demonstrations and social unrest in some areas.
The pandemic has had an effect on the global trade in arms as well. With many countries dedicated to their own countrys response to the pandemic, some have delayed or cancelled orders for weapons, while others have increased their purchases. This has led to an increase in the total volume of the arms trade, which can lead to conflict being more severe or long-lasting. Moreover, the pandemic has badly affected the working of peacekeeping troops, which has delayed the ability to maintain troop levels . This has an adverse impact on the capacity of peacekeeping missions to accomplish their duty effectively, which can lead to increase in violence and instability.
Despite of having such difficulties, the pandemic has also provided an opportunity for conflict resolution and peacebuilding. In other instances, armed groups have declared unilateral truce agreements or expressed an interest in discussing. This has facilitated peace conferences and the possibility of ending conflicts. Additionally, the pandemic has demonstrated the importance of international cooperation and the need of a coordinated response to global issues, this would ultimately promote peacebuilding in the long term.
In conclusion, the COVID-19 pandemic has seriously affected the global armed conflict by exacerbating existing tensions , creating new tensions and disrupting peace making process. As the world is recovering from pandemic it is important to prioritize conflict resolution and peacebuilding.
