"There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish."
- Michelle obama
The 1900s was notably a cruel time for women, especially women laborers. Women suffered abuse from employers, had to work in unfavorable conditions, and earned meager wages associated with long hours of work. Women had no say in public matters, whether economic, social or political.
Clara Zetkin was a German communist activist who sought to make women equal with men. She wanted a world where women had equal opportunities and suffrage, hence advocated for the voices of women to be heard and their rights respected. It was through her efforts that International Women’s Day became established as an annual event.
Initially, the aim was to address the needs of women during that period, but as the world evolved, it became a celebration to recognize and honor the accomplishments and greatness of women across various professions/fields worldwide. In spite of the progress made, the main aim still stands, as some countries continue to treat women unfairly and with low regard. This emphasizes the ongoing need to raise awareness for the well being of women and the recognition of their rights.

Speaking to Idrys Nana Mbiah, a lawyer and the current President of Zonta Club of Accra Jubilee, she tell us a bit of her story dealing with women. "My journey has been driven by the belief that every woman and girl deserves a voice, equal opportunities, and a life free from violence. At Zonta Club of Accra Jubilee, we're dedicated to turning this belief into action. Through initiatives like mentorship programs, skills training, and advocacy for women's rights, we strive to uplift and empower women and girls in Accra. Together with local communities and stakeholders, we work towards creating a safer and more inclusive environment, free from gender-based violence."
This is what Dr Erica Ntiamoah Mensah, a young medical doctor in Ghana, who is passionate about women’s health and public education has to say on the theme for International Women’s Day this year “Invest in women: Accelerate progress”.
"This year's theme strongly resonates with me, because I believe every young woman has potential that needs to be emboldened and nurtured for her to shine. It is therefore crucial for parents, families, teachers, churches and the state to invest and pour resources into women in order to realize said potential which will have ripple benefits on the family, society and nation as a whole. "

Indeed, women play an indispensable role in the world and should not be subjected to discrimination and harassment. Women are to be seen as equals to men and not objectified and condemned because they are “women”. Women are powerful. Women are smart. Women are courageous. Women are leaders. Women are the change makers. Women deserve respect. Women are cardinal.
