Outlook: Learning FLs

We need to cultivate our foreign language knowledge by using them and by being confronted with them in various situations and through the various modes of perception. Otherwise, we will forget some of their features and, as a consequence, become worse at using them. This is a consequence that I do not want to face as a foreign language teacher. For this, I have various strategies to keep my language competence levels upright or, in the best case, even improve them. These are:

  • Try out various language learning apps (vocabulary learning, translator apps, etc.)
  • Every once in a while change the language of instruction on the technological devices that I use regularly (smartphone, notebook, etc.)
  • Keep in touch with people from other countries that I got to know during my volunteering job, during the semester I spent abroad, or when I travelled somehow else (mainly via social media such as facebook, WhatsApp or Skype)
  • Travel to countries where Spanish or English are spoken (practice the language and getting to know the regional cultures)
  • Listen to the radio from places where English or Spanish is an official language
  • Read newspapers and books that are published in English or Spanish
  • Watch Spanish and English films
