Linguistic Context
The language helps in delivering and understanding its content, because the song is well sung by: Gloc-9 and the content is well constructed, then very understandable by the Filipino people. It also serves as inspiration because of the story behind the song that some of the people or mostly of the people who have the same experience like Magda the main character of the song can relate by not giving up, overcoming everything, and also she stood up for what she did.
The message of the song symbolizes “love” because of love Magda go with one guy who’s from Manila who suddenly takes her away that cause to Magda a huge mistake, but Magda stood up of what she did or on her choice, and also in the name of love when her friend Ernesto found out where Magda is he make effort to see Magda his first love since their childhood. In general, the song ‘Magda’ is about the story of a beautiful young woman who now became a prostitute because she thought she would find true love when she left Manila.
The tone of the song as I listened to it the mere preview of the song, it is clear that ‘Magda’–short for Magdalena–is a social commentary on the sad turn of events for many of our young innocent girls deceived and led astray and trapped helplessly and hopelessly to becoming “ladies of the night” in the city.
The speaker, the childhood friend of Mgdalena named Ernesto, is not happy with how his childhood turned out, and because Magdalena turned out into a woman who sleeps during the day, and works at night in a dimly-lit room filled with tables and hollering drunks.
There’s some part that is positive when Magda stood up by what she did or on her choice and never gave up to survive in life, while the negative is that Magda left when she meets the guy from Manila that she thinks is a good luck for her but all in all it is being a inspiration by the listener mostly to the people who has the same experience like Magda.
From this lines "Magdalena ano'ng problema, Bakit 'di ka makawala sa kadena, At sa gabi gabi ikaw ay nasa selda, Na hanap buhay mo ngayon" speaks thousands of untold stories about females as "women in the night" in a dark room full of drunk people, she was naive yet life stuck her to suffer. It's still depicted on our timeline, we question people who have this kind of job and mostly didn't understand the circumstances of it, and those females saw it as their prison which had never been easy to escape because they knew that it will cause their life and so they hold on and called it "kapit sa patalim".
