In the Dataset we used, there were predefined numerical features that we took into account to predict the trends over time (from 1920-2020), they are as follows :
Instrumentalness : This value represents the number of vocals in the song, the closer it is to 1.0, the greater the likelihood that the track contains no Vocal Content
Acousticness : This value describes how naturally created the music is with instruments ( guitar/drums/sax /etc)
Liveness : This value describes the probability that the song was recorded with a live audience. A value of 0.8 provides a strong likelihood that the track was live.
Speechiness : This value detects the presence of spoken words in a track.
Energy: This value represents a perceptual measure of intensity and activity. Typically energetic tracks feel fast, loud, and noisy
Danceability : This value describes how suitable a track is for dancing based on a combination of musical elements including tempo, rhythm, and beat strength
Valence : This value describes the musical positiveness conveyed by a track. Tracks with high valence sound more positive(happy, cheerful, euphoric), and tracks with low valence sound more negative( sad, depressed, angry)
From the Graph what we can infer is that acoustincess Peaked in the mid 1920's and was on a high until 1950's which is the Jazz Era and then was signifitcant even in the Rock n Roll Era even though lower than the previous era. But we see a huge difference after the Rock N Roll era in the Modern Era where it has dipped and has been decreasing significantly
The energy feature has increased signficantly from the Jazz to Rock'N'Roll to the Modern Era suggesting that the electronic music(techno , house ,Funk, Trance) has taken over and has gained popularity.
The danceability feature was at its high in the late 20's and it dipped around the 40's. It has gradually increased since then corresponding to the inception of electronic music.
Instrumentalness has showed a declining trend after its peak years between 1920 to 1945 which tells us that artists are choosing to include words over having just musical notes.
The following page talks via the medium of a radar chart about how since the start of music; what level of features (acousticness, energy, danceabililty, speechiness, and instrumentalness) each artist used to create a song in a particular genre:
Rock being the most famous genre of all time has high energy and instrumentalness observed by many artists. Even the concerts of Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, etc. are filled with the same energy levels.
Electronic music has the maximum danceability explaining the origin of festivals like Tomorrowland, Ultra Music Festival, Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, etc.
Pop is the most balanced genre as it has a combination of all the features and hence making it one of the most liked genre. The reason behind is justified by the balance as pop artists repeat the same balanced patterns in most of their songs.
