The research:

We need to research:

• Crime rates in day vs night
• Energy use statistics for outdoor lighting (including the cost of keeping a light on over the course of a year)
• Other areas that have reduced outdoor lighting, and the results of such initiatives

The experiment:

• Our first experiment would be in residential areas, and consist of three parts:

1. Walk/ride bikes through set routes in Boulder's residential areas and record how many houses have lights on at night.
2. Deliver informational door knocker material describing environmental impacts of lighting and minimal crime reduction from lighting.
3. Re-do transects through Boulder to see if the project is having an impact through strictly education. Record data.

• Work with businesses who have control over their spaces to turn off lights at night. This one will be more challenging, and we need to find points of leverage. Many businesses rent and have financial incentives to keep lights on at night to illuminate products or keep signs on.
