Rice came from a village from the kingdom of Xur, happily living in the village with his family and not wanting to leave as he was perfectly content with how is life was going to be. How it should've been. His parents had been recommending him to explore farther than just the village, wanting him to live a better life than what they could provide for him. 

One day they mentioned something about a place called Grimm Academy from a poster they found, adamantly advising him to go in hopes of him branching it. Rice brushed it off though, not wanting to spread himself anymore than he already did. However, one day he woke up to large screams and shouts outside of his home, swiftly woken up by his parents and hidden in the basement of their house, feeling a scratch at his face and the screams of his parents. They pushed through, regardless of what was happening and told Rice to stay quiet. 

Rice closed his eyes and cuffed his ears to muffle the screams until silence. Once it became morning, Rice came upstairs he saw his house had been destroyed, scratch marks and broken furniture everywhere and in further into the home...was his parents. No movement nor noise, they were gone. Falling into grief Rice didn't know what to do, he lost his home, family and friends in one night. 

As he laid on the ground he noticed the poster his parents brought up. Promising to live a life his parents would be proud of he decided to be more open to people, do things out of his comfort zone and live a life they couldn't provide for him. attending Grimm Academy to achieves these aspirations, and to maybe find out how to use magic for his own purposes.

He arrived at Grimm Academy on opening day and managed to acquire a horse named Gummy. Rice was mostly a solitary character at the beginning, not really interacting with anybody until towards midterms where he started to push himself to meet other people. 

Following the midterms, he started talking to the other students and acting more friendly, opening himself to acting more like how he wanted to be when he was younger; however, he disappeared for while. People are unsure where he went as he didn’t say, but during the conclusion of season 1 he reappeared only to see everything be reset.
