Old Homestead Campground is at: 90 County Road 21 Rand, Colorado 80473
Rand is remote (in the best way). Below are three solid route options depending on weather, scenery, and how much mountain driving you want. See more of Colorado and make it a round trip instead of an out and back.
Estimated Drive Time: ~3.5 hours
Why take this route:
Most gradual mountain driving
Very scenic
Easy services and food stops in Fort Collins
Estimated Drive Time: ~3 hours *This is the most direct route and quickest.
Why take this route:
Beautiful mountain valleys and open views
Passes near Grand Lake and Hot Sulphur Springs if you want to include side trips
A great option if you’re pairing travel with sightseeing
You go through the burnt forest from the East Troublesome Fire in 202
Good to know: Includes higher elevation driving
You need to plan ahead for this route and obtain a timed entry permit for Rocky Mountain National Park.
Estimated Drive Time: ~ lots of hours
Why take this route:
Stunning scenery through Northwest Colorado
You go through a National Park
Feels like a mini road‑trip adventure
Good to know: Longest option, but arguably the prettiest. You'll want to plan for a whole day with all the stops you'll want to make along the way. Even better, combine it with an overnight in Estes Park or Grand Lake depending on which direction you're headed. There is high mountain travel involved.
Estimated Drive Time: ~2.5 hours *This route is the same drive time as route 2.
Why take this route:
Quiet roads and Colorado River landscapes along the Trough road
Fewer crowds than I‑70 corridor driving
Drive past Hot Sulphur Springs for a stinky but relaxing dip in the hot springs
You go through the burnt forest from the East Troublesome Fire in 202
Good to know: Cell service can be limited — download maps ahead of time.
Estimated Drive Time: ~2.5 hours ~2.5 hours *This route is the same drive time as route 1.
Why take this route:
Quiet roads and wide‑open landscapes
Fewer crowds than I‑70 corridor driving
Classic ranchland and North Park views
This brings you closer to Walden if you want to make a pit stop
Good to know: Cell service can be limited — download maps ahead of time.
Estimated Drive Time: ~2.75 hours * Same final approach as route 1.
Why take this route:
You prefer driving I70
Drive past Hot Sulphur Springs for a stinky but relaxing dip in the hot springs
You go through the burnt forest from the East Troublesome Fire in 202
Good to know: Cell service can be limited — download maps ahead of time.
Weather can change quickly — check conditions before you go
Fuel up before head out on your trip
Cell phone service is spotty througout all the routes. Download offline maps and playlists (you’ll want both). You can also plug in your location before you leave and so long as you don't make any stops you should be all set. Doesn't hurt to review the route and know which roads you'll be on just in case.
If you have questions about which route makes the most sense for your trip, feel free to reach out — we’re happy to help!

We do have a limited number of each lodging option so we'll do our best to balance your preference with the overall group. On the RSVP form we'll have you select your 1st and 2nd choice. After the RSVP deadline we'll work on maximizing space and peoples preferences. We'll then confirm with everyone and work out the fees for each guest party.
If you'd like to extend your stay, please indicate that on the RSVP form and we'll work with you and Old Homestead to extend your stay.
If camping or glamping isn't your thing you can check out hotels in Walden (30 minutes away), Granby (45 minutes away). There might be a couple of Airbnb's or VRBO's in the area. If you do choose to stay offsite, we ask that you designate a driver since there are no taxi or rideshare services available. Wildlife is aplenty in the area and active at night.
