Substations receive bulk power from generation and distribute it to the towns through feeders. Each substation has a strict maximum capacity limit. If the combined ammount of electricity being drawn from the grid (load) goes past this limit, the substation's main breakers will trip.ย Substations can only supply what they get from a generation station, these can be coal, hydro, wind or solar. Each type of generation has its own limitations and advantages.
Transformer Load Meters
These meters measure the amount of electricity flowing through a transformer. When the load increases they will change to orange and red. Taking more load than the transformer can carry will cause the feeder to trip and protect the transformer. When the transformer has trippedd you will need to reset it by switching it off and on again.
Note that transformers that are overloaded cannot be reset untill the load has reduced or until additional electricity is provided from another supply.
Substation tips
Each substation has a large transformer and feeder breakers. The power can be sent either through the overhead lines or underground cables.
It is important toย balance the capacity a substation handles with the size of the transformer, the substation transformer breaker or the feeders can trip if there is more load than the substation can handle.
Tripped transformers (flashing lights)
This transformer has tripped an will need to be reset.ย It might be required to follow the reset procedure to get the grid back on again.
Very cool photo of our substation ๐ฅน
