The Inter-Secondary Schools’ Athletic Championships is the premier Track and Field event on the national athletic calendar. It has been held in late March/early April each year since its inception fifty-five (55) years ago. The InterCol Games evolved from being held at the Queen's Park to the Kirani James Athletic Stadium in St. George’s, although the Games made history when it was hosted at Progress Park, St. Andrew’s for the first time since it started in 1940s. The Games have benefited and grown over the years from the sponsorship of Scotiabank (1981 – 2018) and now with Republic Bank from 2020 - present. In 2016 Inter-col Games celebrated the Golden Jubilee.
In this 55th year of the Grenada Inter-Secondary School Games, Intercol, we pay tribute to the founding Principals of the Games Brother Liguori of Presentation Brothers College and Mr. K.I.M Smith of the Grenada Boys Secondary School who contested the Intercol Games between the two school from the late 1940’s until an abrupt end in 1953, the same year SAASS was invited to join the Games. It was the visionary leadership of Brother Liguori and later Brother Anthony (PBC), Mr. Baptiste (GBSS) and Mr. Julien of SAASS who re-engineered and revived the Intercol Games in 1965. They would establish the conceptual framework and organizational template for the growth and development of the Games in the succeeding years. Mr. Julien together with Mr. Baptise and Brother Anthony would become the architect of the GSSGA (the Grenada Secondary School Games Association – the organizers of the Games and late the Grenada Association of Principals of Secondary School – GAPSS.
Inter-col has also produced many world class and Olympic athletes over the years, for example, Kirani James, Anderson Peters, Lindon Victor, Kurt Felix, Allyene Francique, Rondell Bartholomew, Jacinta Bartholomew, and many other sports ambassadors who have represented Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique with distinction on the international stage. It has also been the gateway through which many young Grenadian athletes have been scouted and recruited to Colleges and Universities in the United States, Canada, Jamaica and to other countries.
During the opening ceremony at the Games in 2016, the Founding Principals, administrations, coaches, starters, officials, athletes and persons who had been associated with the Games since it began were publicly recognized. These individuals were recognized for their contributions towards the development of this national treasure, the Republic Bank Inter-col Games. The Games played a pivotal role in Grenada’s acquisition of its first Olympic Gold medal through Kirani James’ most outstanding performance in the 400 m in London, 2012. In 2023 during the games, we will again honour Sister Gabrielle Mason (SJC) and Brother George (SJCSS) for their contribution to the evolution of this Inter-Secondary School Games that we have all grown to love and cherish.
Every year Inter-col provides an excellent opportunity for the athletic ambassadors of the respective schools to harness their athletic abilities and to showcase their skills and talents. It is important to note that the exposure, camaraderie and teamwork engendered by the games have opened the gates for significant opportunities for the educational advancement for our students.
The athletes who participate in the Inter-col Games come from over 25 secondary schools and number approximately 900 - 1200 student athletes each year. The overall results for 2018 saw the St. Andrew’s Secondary School (SAASS) emerge the champions in the Boy’s division and the St. Joseph’s Convent, Grenville (SJCSA) the girl’s champion.
As the Inter-col Games continue to grow and develop, it is important to recognize the role that the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Sports, the Police, the Media, the business community, current Principals and teachers, parents, students and the general public have played in the success of the games over the years.
The year 2023 will see the introduction of new combined events (the Heptathlon and the Octathlon) at the Games which will be executed over two to three days. The three days spread will assist the event Director to manage the Games better and to ensure that we have better recovery time for the athletes as we seek to care for them and provide for their proper development. It is also the first time that a central production of the Games will be undertaken with a central broadcast team and will be streamed live via pay-per-view.
