I obtained my Master of Social Work degree from the University of Toronto in 1994 and my Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Psychology from York University in 1992. I am registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and am a member of the Ontario Association of Social Workers. I have taken numerous workshops and courses. I'm committed to ongoing professional development.
I have many years of direct practice experience providing a range of services such as individual, couple, and family counselling as well as group work, wellness coaching and case management. More recently, I worked at a large family service agency in Toronto for eight and a half years providing individual and couple counselling, and running men's groups focusing on emotional intelligence, coping with transitions, fathering, and dealing with intimate partner difficulties.
Now, I am running a full-time private practice where I exclusively offer support to individuals and couples through The Healing Collective. I believe that people's lives are unique and often quite multi-layered. Therefore, I do not believe in a 'one-size fits all' approach.
My counselling approach is informed by several therapuetic orientations such as Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance and Committment Therapy and Family Systems.
My work with couples is informed by the work of John Gottman and Family Systems. I also draw inspiration from the work of Esther Perel and Terry Real. When working with couples, I see my role as more of a facilitator of dialogue than as a 'fixer.' I invite couples to have conversations about how they want to be in a relationship with each other based on their beliefs, values, committments and make choices around how they could better live their lives. I believe in self-determination and that each partner in the relationship has to decide for themselves if they wish to continue walking on a path together with their partner or take a separate path.
I live in the East York community of Toronto with my wife of twenty nine years and our son. We love the neighbourhood and enjoy browsing the shops along the Danforth, taking a walk on the boardwalk at the Beach, going for a coffee in Leslieville and visiting the Brick Works.
