Is Green Crew a City Program?
No, we are a program of an independent non-profit organization, Sustainable Claremont. To make our urban forest a success, we work very closely with the City of Claremont to canvass for homes willing to water trees and spread education about the City's tree policies. We also work to make sure we choose trees that are approved by the Tree Commission and adhere by the City's Designated Street Tree List.
How do you choose homes that trees are planted in?
In 2015, City Council approved Viable Planting Sites. It shall be the objective of the City to plant all viable vacant sites located on City property or within City right-of-ways.
What is a City right-of-way?
Section 12.26.010 of the Claremont Municipal Code (Appendix B) defines "easement," "parkway," or "right-of-way". The City retains an established right-of-way or easement on each public street, in most cases, 12' from the face of the curb into their lawn OR in a parkway. These easements are City-controlled areas for the purpose of public improvements, including streets, sidewalks, curb and gutters, driveway approaches, streetlights, street signs and street trees.
Any tree located within this public easement is recognized as a City-owned tree.
Who is responsible for watering trees?
Residents are responsible for watering trees. Pruning, disease care, removal and replacement due to pest or drought death are managed by the City.
Residents: For convenient watering reminders, we have implemented a weekly text/e-mail watering notification system. Sign up here.
Why don't we just plant natives?
Natives such as the California Sycamore and Coast Live Oak have experienced a liking by pests and disease. To continue to maintain our urban forest and improve it’s resiliency, we plant various species of trees to combat mass die out from untreatable insects & diseases.
