Archery With Clarity
Dear archer,
Please read the following information regarding how private lessons from Coach Tim work. If you decide to request private lessons from Coach Tim, then it means that you agree to the following terms and conditions as written out on this page. It is up to you to ensure that you've read and understood these terms and conditions before taking lessons and you accept full responsibility for your own actions while under Coach Tim's coaching time.
While at any archery range, you will ensure that you comply with any and all posted rules, regulations, and guidelines of that range, as well as any verbal safety commands or requests of those present in any sort of authoritative capacity at that range.
During your lesson with Coach Tim, you must ensure that you comply with any and all safety commands or requests given to you by Coach Tim, in addition to the archery range's rules.
While at any archery range, you will assume all responsibility and liability of any damages, losses, or injuries that you cause to yourself, other people, and property.
If you are injured, or injure/harm someone else during your lesson, you will be held liable for any and all legal, medical, or other expenses and costs that arise from the incident.
If you are injured, or injure/harm someone else during your lesson, you cannot hold Coach Tim partially nor fully responsible/liable, and assume responsibility/liability for the incident.
While at any archery range, your own safety, and the well-being of your archery equipment, will ultimately be your sole responsibility. You must be able to use your own good-judgement to ensure that you never put yourself or others in harm's way while shooting, even when under the supervision of a coach.
If you have any safety concerns or questions before or while shooting, it is up to you to inform your coach, and/or other relevant people at the archery range, and to cease activities at the range until you feel safe and are able to maintain safety yourself.
The following can be considered as "universally" accepted rules and guidelines of your typical public archery range. Do keep in mind that many ranges may have different rules and guidelines, and that you should research a range's specific policies before shooting there:
The Shooting Line & Shooting Lanes:
Most ranges have a designated and marked shooting line in which all archers in that area must stand on when actively shooting, to ensure that no actively shooting archer is standing in front or behind another one. Archers should also not cross past the shooting line for any reason while archers on the range so that there is no risk of anyone being shot at.
Most ranges also have separate lanes for archers to stand in while shooting. Only 1 archer is usually allowed to stand in each lane while shooting is talking place for safety reasons and to prevent overcrowding. If there are not clearly marked lanes at a range, then the rule is usually only 1-2 archers per target bale, and/or 1 archer per target face on the target bale.
Safety Commands:
Most public ranges are "uncontrolled" ranges during regular operating hours, meaning there is not a range-master present to oversee the range and maintain safety. This means that the archers present need to call out safety commands to each other to ensure everyone is on the same page of what everyone else is doing. The most common way of doing this is by verbally calling out specific range commands and waiting for appropriate verbal responses to those commands.
"HOLD"/"NOT CLEAR": Any archer may call out this command at any time, which requires all archers present at the range to cease shooting downrange and/or remain behind the shooting line due to a safety hazard. For example, if someone sees a person walking dangerously close to the target area and is as risk of being shot, that someone should loudly yell "HOLD" or "NOT CLEAR" multiple times to make other archers aware of the hazard and cease shooting until that person is safely removed from the target area.
"CLEAR (to shoot"): When arriving at a (presumed) empty range, where it doesn't look like anyone is there, call out "CLEAR" before loading your arrow to indicate that you intend to start shooting arrows downrange. If other people are already at the range, then the last person to cross back over the shooting line after retrieving their arrows will call this "CLEAR" command. After this command is issued, all archers present on the line who hear the command should respond with the word, "CLEAR" as well, to acknowledge that they heard the command and agree that it is safe to commence shooting. However, archers should wait a few seconds before actually shooting in case anyone calls out a "HOLD" command.
"CLEAR (to pull): When you are finished shooting arrows, wait behind the shooting line until everyone else on the shooting line is done shooting. The last person to finish shooting their arrows for the round will call out "CLEAR", to indicate that no one is shooting anymore so archers are now safe to walk downrange to retrieve their arrows. However, archers should again wait a few seconds before actually entering the range in case anyone calls out a "HOLD" command.
Equipment Safety:
When the arrow is loaded on your bow, make sure the arrow tip is always pointed in a safe direction, which is either down towards the ground or downrange towards the target. Do not point a loaded bow at anyone or anything you do not want to accidentally damage or injure.
When people are downrange, keep your bow unloaded and arrows in your quiver, arrow tube, or your bow hand to visibly show everyone at the range that you are not intending to begin shooting.
Ensure you are always handling your arrows with care, in a way that would not put yourself or others at risk of being poked by either end of the arrow.
When walking around with your equipment at the range, be sure to walk to avoid tripping or falling.
When shooting at a range where others are also shooting, be sure to only shoot the designated number of arrows allowed per round (usually 5 or 6 arrows per round), and step off the shooting line once you are done shooting to keep the line moving.
