We use cellulose paper to filter out larger particles from the air.
A close-up look shows the fibrous texture of the cellulose layer.
A cellulose based material will be used as an external material because cellulose is abundant, and porosity of this type of material can be manipulated based on its composition. Furthermore, a paper-like material can be readily made from common yard waste and water. It is noted that cellulose strands in paper are held together by residual glucose units. With this knowledge and the knowledge that the porosity can be manipulated, we have been able to create a usable cellulose material that is tough enough to form the outer layer of the mask.
