Human Resources Intern (May 2022- Present)
As an intern in the human resources division at the Indiana State Police, I have faced many difficult and exciting challenges. A large one being recruitment for the incoming State Police and Capitol Police academies along with professional staff positions. I also have had the opportunity to work with pay increases and leaves. This job has allowed me to truly hone in on my organization, problem solving, and communication skills. These skills are all essential to any professional setting.
A project that I have particularly enjoyed in this internship has been working to increase the applicant pool for upcoming academies, and reading through and compiling information about applicants to create the presentation that is given to the Superintendent so that he may select the incoming cadets.
Primary Responsibilities/Projects
During my time at the State Police I was able to work on the recruitment process for upcoming police academies, projects, and assisting with daily activities. Some projects include updating pay with the pay matrix for troopers and inputting raises, assisting in different leaves in the onboarding of professional staff and trooper trainees, and retirements. I also worked frequently with PeopleSoft systems.
Learning Objectives
Before starting this internship I had set some goals in place. Some of these goals include: H3: Demonstrate and gain transferable skills in a professional work environment
H4: Work effectively individually or in a team-setting to accomplish assigned tasks
H5: Determine professional fit within a health-related organization
Having these goals in mind were the making of a great foundation for my expectations of myself in my internship. These goals also helped me to recognize things that I have been accomplishing. This internship has given me and helped me work tremendously on professional skills that will be beneficial to me in any setting. I have been able to have a great split between individual and team work which I felt helped best create quality work and outcomes that perfectly aligned with the goals and expectations set for myself or the group I was working with. While this internship was not within a health organization, human resources exists in every setting and this has set me to feel confident in a human resources setting and a multitude of professional settings.
Personal Development
Before staring my internship at the State Police, I had limited experience in human resources. This internship has helped me gain a great understanding of the inner workings of organizations and education about working within complex organizations. I was able to learn a lot of hands on and soft skills observing various duties such as onboarding, retirement processes, meetings, recruitment strategies, payroll, and various leave types. One thing in regards to my development during this internship is prior to this position I felt confident in my communication skills, but quickly learned how to improve on them feel much more confident.
Academic Connections
The courses I have taken at IUPUI have helped to prepare me and give me a good foundation going into this internship. The knowledge I gained from courses including the Capstone preparation, Ethics seminar, Organizational behavior and human resources, and health policy were a great preparation for me. Being that this is my first experience in human resources, I was initially intimidated, but having the foundation I have received from IUPUI, made me feel more confident interacting with upper level personnel, in meetings, and in my work. Moving forward in my degree I am excited to take more classes that will expand my knowledge and give me more preparation for a full time position in my field.
