This is a mini-unit where we will focus on solving algebraic Equations. Throughout this mini-unit, students will be responsible to complete practice activities using a checklist. All practice activities will be self-corrected during class time and submitted when complete and checked!

Here are the workbook sheets for everything that has to do with equations.

The next section will be writing and solving one and two-step equations. Since we've only focused on expressions up until this point, the first thing we go over is the difference between the two.

Here is a video explaining.

2. Writing Equations:
The next topic we covered was how to read word problems, and write the corresponding algebraic equations.

Here is a video covering this concept.

And some practice (answers at end).

3. Solving Equations

It is very important students recognize the operation being used, and applying the inverse operation to "Undo" the operation and get the variable alone on one side of the equation. Often, students will easily be able to find the answer in their head, but we are learning the proper steps to isolating a variable so that they will have those steps down pat when they start solving multi-step equations in grade 8 and beyond.

Here is a video showing how to model and solve equations using algebra tiles. This will help visualize solving equations.

One-Step Equations:

Here is a video that explains about using inverse operations to solve equations

Here is some practice for solving one-step equations (with answers)

Two-Step Equations:
*Remember to ALWAYS "Undo" the addition/subtraction first, and THEN the multiplication/division. Students have a "doodle notes" page in their math notes duo-tang with steps and examples.

Here is a video discussing two-step equations and why maintaining equality is important.

Here is some practice for solving two-step equations (with answers) level 1

Here is some more practice (level 2)

Word-Problems
Students are reminded to always answer word problems with a sentence, and to continue to always show their work!
