Why Grand Strand: I love being at Grand Strand because of the diverse pathology we get to see and experience. Myrtle Beach's popularity as a vacation spot brings in over 19 million visitors a year, allowing us to handle a wide variety of cases. Also, being so close to the beach, golf courses, outdoor dining, and so much more keeps us entertained and is a great way to decompress after a shift.

Why Grand Strand: After rotating here, Grand Strand was appealing for its high volume, high acuity main site and the smaller freestanding ED’s giving a variety of experiences and more than adequate training to become an independent doc. Also the co-residents and attendings make the learning environment fun and easy going.

Alexandra Doan, MD

About me: I grew up in Great Falls, Virginia and attended The Madeira School for high-school before finishing my undergraduate degree at Swarthmore College.  I have a Masters of Physiology from Georgetown University and have spent summers abroad as a research assistant in the Bray lab at the University of Cambridge in England before attending medical school at University of Virginia. I love to grow plants and cultivate several exotic species of carnivorous plants. I am a member of the Mid Atlantic Carnivorous Plant Society (MACPS), but I also grow plenty of vegetables and culinary herbs as well, and make a very tasty pesto with my homegrown basil. I am also a big baseball fan and I have attended over 200 live major league baseball games and attended World Series and All Star games.

Why Grand Strand: I am interested in medical toxicology and Grand Strand Medical Center has the opportunity to work first-hand with a variety of unusual toxicological emergencies including marine envenomations, overdoses, and exotic snake envenomations with access to an exotic anti venom supply, in addition to the large volume of  patients with a myriad of other emergency medical situations. There are also opportunities for residents to act in leadership positions within the hospital, the community and nationwide in the specialty, and I am enjoying the opportunity to serve as the EMRA representative for Grand Strand.

I also love that the Grand Strand area, with 60 miles of coastline, has a centuries old history, and in the 1700s was home to pirates, including the legendary pirate Blackbeard, Edward Teach. There is always something to do, and the weather is great too!

My hobbies: gardening, carnivorous plants, naginata (martial arts), embroidery, knitting, video games, baseball (Nationals fan)

Why Grand Strand: We see such a diverse pathology at Grand Strand. Myrtle Beach has so many visitors and with that comes unique patient presentations and chief complaints. I love our faculty and coresidents, everyone is willing to help and we have a great work atmosphere! We also get to work in different clinical environments from a level 1 trauma center to freestanding EDs.

My hobbies: I enjoy exercising and working out at Orange Theory. I’m a huge NFL fan and won our resident fantasy football group this past year. I love spending time with my fiancée and our dog Micky. We cook frequently and love to travel.

Why Grand Strand: The biggest advantage is the privilege of training under experts across multiple sub-specialities of emergency medicine. I wanted to be part of a program that emphasizes growth, mentorship, and personalized feedback to become a highly competent and safe emergency medicine physician. There is undeniable support from your senior residents, attendings, and ED staff!

Why Grand Strand: From afar, grand strand was appealing because of the high acuity and location next to the beach.I wanted to be challenged during residency.  I also grew up in Florida and always enjoyed having quick access to the beach, so that was a huge plus when looking at Grand Strand. What sold me though, was the people. I made a trip up to Myrtle Beach and met all the residents at a meet and greet. I had an amazing time and that it was ultimately what sold me on Grand Strand. My co-residents and faculty couldn’t be better people and are undoubtedly my favorite part about Grand Strand.

About me: I'm just a guy from the middle of nowhere South Georgia who decided to be a physician. Im the first person in my family to go to college and had an atypical route to get to where I am now. I was a bouncer and bartender before medical school and I help mentor nontraditional students navigate the road to becoming future physicians.

Why Grand Strand: Grand Strand is an amazing place to train. The acuity is high and so is the volume. I wanted to train at a place that would prepare me for anything from community hospitals to academic centers and I feel that Grand Strand is a good mix of both. Also Myrtle Beach is the only place where you can live within walking distance to the beach on a resident's salary!

My hobbies: During my downtime, I pursue a diverse range of hobbies to keep life exciting and balanced. Outdoors, I feel most alive, whether exploring trails, camping under the stars, or simply soaking up nature. Family and friends are my pillars of support, cherished companions for both quiet evenings and adventurous outings. Walking my furry companions is a joyful ritual that keeps us all healthy and happy. At the gym, I find strength and solace in weightlifting, while DIY projects at home fuel my creativity. I’m a first generation American and speak Russian (also know some intermediate Spanish and very basic Japanese- my twin brother lives in Japan). 

Why Grand Strand: Interesting pathology with the location of the hospital, unique patient population, many opportunities for education and learning for situations outside of the hospital (things like wilderness medicine, toxicology, etc). Everyone is also so kind and welcoming. I love the beach and the outdoors and all the area has to offer.

A dietetics degree and scribing in the local emergency department led me to medical school in the mountains of WV. My Australian Shepherd (and best friend) Leo has been with me all the way. And if none of that is interesting, you should also I was born in the backseat of a car.

Why Grand Strand: I chose Grand Strand after getting to watch how much fun the previous residents had together even during a virtual interview. Getting to spend residency at the beach isn't a bad deal either.

Medical School: Marian University COM

About me: Myself and my husband Casey moved to Myrtle Beach from Indiana.  We met in 2014 when we worked together as zip-line tour guides!  We are big concert enthusiasts, have gone to hundreds of shows as well as music festivals and concert cruises.  We got an Australian Shepherd, named Coors, this past year who is the coolest pup.

Why Grand Strand: I was born, raised, and did all my education in landlocked Indiana before moving to Myrtle Beach for residency.  I've loved Myrtle, Grand Strand, and our residency/people so much I wasn't ready to leave after 3 years.  I am completing the Ultrasound Fellowship this year then will stay on as an Attending!

My hobbies: Exploring restaurants and breweries, going to the beach, attending concerts, playing sports/yard games with friends.
