The GIA takes great pride in the management of the Hayden Brown Forest. We have a long-term management plan, developed and now managed by Hayden Lake Forestry of Putney, VT (Hayden Lake is part of the Lake family of Grafton and named after Hayden Brown!). The map below shows the management plan, with the land divided into sections to be logged. Each 'section' gets logged every 15 - 25 years.
The two red areas on the map below represent "Patch Cuts". A patch cut is where a small section of land is cleared of all trees. Unlike 'clear cutting' which is often done purely for economic reasons, patch cutting is all about the long-term health of the land. The sunlit open space surrounded by forest creates a variety of opportunities for everything from the regeneration of diverse tree species to an influx of song birds to an increase in large mammal traffic. Feel free to explore these areas as well as the rest of forest!
