The Graduate Symposium will be held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The revised dates for the symposium are 7-10 April, 2021.

Who can apply for the Graduate Symposium?


All full-time PhD students currently enrolled in a university in the Asia-Pacific region* are welcome to apply for the Graduate Symposium. Students with significant prior exposure and experience with Machine Learning research will benefit from the Graduate Symposium. Early to advanced PhD students whose research will benefit from the graduate symposium are welcome to apply. All participants are expected to be familiar with programming in Python, linear algebra, calculus, and basic probability theory and statistics.


*Countries in the Asia-Pacific region include East Asia (Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan), Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam), South Asia (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka), Australia, New Zealand



What are the prerequisites for attending the Graduate Symposium?


Mandatory Requirements:


  • Student currently enrolled in a full-time PhD program

  • Prior coursework and development/research experience in areas related to Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence


Preference will be given to candidates with a background in one of the graduate symposium’s sub-tracks: Computer Vision, Natural Language Understanding, and ML Foundations.



Is there a registration fee?


No, registration is free for all selected students.



Will I be provided a certificate for attending the Graduate Symposium?


Yes, attendees for the program will be provided with a participation certificate.



What do I need to submit in the application form?

The application form is an integral part of your selection in the program. Besides basic information, please keep the following details handy before you submit your application:

  • Curriculum vitae

  • Details of your academic history (coursework, grades)

  • List of your publications (if any)

  • Programming profile/Project URLs (if any)

  • A statement of research interest (max. 2 pages, including references): be sure to include details of your PhD research direction, past coursework/projects in ML/AI, and your motivation for attending the graduate symposium


Please note that it will not be possible to save the application and resume it at a later stage, so have all the necessary documents and information with you before starting your application. Applications need to be completed in full in order to be considered.
